Bill Oppliger Named Permanent Principal at Elma High School

The Elma School Board approved the permanent hire of Principal Bill Oppliger in a March board meeting.

A hiring committee interviewed four candidates and ultimately recommended the hire of Oppliger to fill the vacant Elma High School Principal position. Bill has been serving in the position as an interim since October 2021.

“Mr. Oppliger has been impressive with his ability to step into any situation and succeed. He has done an outstanding job at Elma High School this past year,” said Elma School District Superintendent Chris Nesmith. “We look forward to him continuing to provide exceptional leadership and support for the students and staff at Elma High School.”

Oppliger comes to Elma from Yakima (WA) School District, where he served as a teacher and principal at West Valley High School. His first teaching job was in Grays Harbor for the Aberdeen (WA) School District.

Before his career in education, Bill served in the United States Navy. Oppliger has fifteen years of high school principal experience and is state and nationally recognized for his work in applied sciences, STEM, and for building a nationally recognized dual credit program.

"I am honored to be part of Elma High School and the Elma community. Over the course of my interim, I came to appreciate the exceptional staff and community and am excited about the opportunity to become principal here," said Oppliger. "I look forward to being part of the future of Elma High School. It is a great place to be."
