Elma, WA – At the most recent Elma School Board of Directors meeting held on December 17 at the East Grays Harbor Transportation Cooperative, Katie Gonsalves was sworn in as the newest member of the Elma School Board of Directors. Michael Smith and Jaime Bailey were also sworn in, as they renewed their terms as members of the board. All three won their positions unopposed at the General Election held in November 2025. The Elma School Board of Directors positions are nonpartisan.

Gonsalves is the new director for District 5. Ryan Cristelli previously served for this district and was celebrated for his service at last month's board meeting.

Michael Smith was unanimously elected Board Chair, while Bernadette Bowers was unanimously elected the Vice Chair.

Other board highlights:

  • The Board had an initial discussion about refurbishing football helmets, which needs to be done every two years for insurance purposes. Helmets need to be replaced every 10 years. Board members will do further research because safety is paramount, but cost is a consideration, too. Many helmets offer similar safety ratings but at significantly differing price points.
  • Elma has been awarded a no-match grant for playing fields. A follow-up story will be released with further details.
  • Policy 4300 limiting immigration enforcement in schools was approved.
  • Our facilities director provided an update on various projects with the Davis Field construction project providing required ADA compliance and things moving ahead with the Middle School Gym roof. All current projects either meet legal or safety needs.

The next Board meeting will be Wednesday, January 14 at 6 p.m.
