Elma School District Honors 2025 Employees of the Year and Retiring Staff
Elma, WA – May 9, 2025 – The Elma School District proudly honored outstanding staff and retirees at the 2025 Eagle Celebration of Appreciation, recognizing the individuals whose dedication, compassion, and excellence have shaped generations of Elma students and elevated the district’s mission to empower all students to soar.
At the heart of this year’s celebration were the District Employees of the Year—individuals who exemplify professional excellence and student-centered service.
Sherry Leon was named the 2025 Certificated Employee of the Year, celebrated for her unwavering commitment to equity, student voice, and mastery-based instruction. Sherry’s classroom is known not just for academic rigor but for being a safe, inclusive space where every learner is affirmed. A role model for her colleagues, Sherry’s leadership reflects Elma’s core values and vision for education that meets each student where they are.
Katie O’Hagan received recognition as the 2025 Classified Employee of the Year for her exceptional work supporting students across special education and general education settings at Elma Middle School. With a unique blend of strategic foresight and boundless positivity, Katie has been instrumental in advancing accessible learning practices, including leading efforts toward ADA-accessible infrastructure within the district. Her ability to uplift and advocate for every student stands as a model for inclusive practice.

- Janice Hope – Transportation Services
- Lexi Peterson – Nutrition Services
The evening also paid tribute to seven dedicated retirees, whose combined service totals more than 165 years. Each has left a lasting mark on the district and the community.

- Mark Keating – 38 years, Certificated
- Steve Sutton – 27 years, Classified
- Susan Jones – 26 years, Classified
- Diane Dodd – 11 years, Certificated
- Jhanson Wesley – 10 years, Classified
- Andel Hoke – 8 years, Certificated
A special tribute was given to Mark Keating, whose 38-year career included roles as teacher, coach, principal, and most recently, instructional leader. His leadership in advancing mastery-based learning and fostering a districtwide culture of student-centered instruction has had a profound and enduring impact.
