Elma School Board Unanimously Approves Education Programs Levy -
December 13, 2017

The Elma School Board unanimously passed a resolution at the December 13th Board meeting to place a Replacement Educational Programs and Operation Levy on the ballot February 13th.

School board members decided to approve a levy collection based on a necessary higher limit instead of the lower, maximum amount imposed by the Washington State Legislature this summer, which will be effective in 2019.

At the school board meeting, Superintendent Kevin Acuff, told the Board that the recommendation came from the levy advisory committee, as well as, recommendations from Business Manager, Lisa Arnold.

The Elma Board decided to ask voters for a higher rate because this is the cost for the Elma School District to come closer to maintaining its current level of programming, although it will still not meet the anticipated needs of the district.

If approved by voters, a replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy will collect $2,514,435 annually in 2019 and 2020. The current levy expires at the end of 2018. The rate to be collected is currently estimated to be $3.15 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The current levy collected $3,170,610 at approximately $4.05 per $1000 of assessed valuation. Given the current law, taxes will decrease for Elma property owners during the 2019-20 levy cycle. If the legislature decided to increase the amount local districts could collect, this levy would result in taxes remaining approximately the same for that time period.
