Core/Flex for Implementation 2011

TheElma High School staff has had concerns that students are not reaching their academic potential. As a result, a committee was developed to address these academic concerns. Several staff members visited neighboring high schools for ideas and a committee was formed to examine solutions. The program that emerged is a 30 minute period during the school day called Core/Flex.

Why do we need a program?

o 560 total students according to the 4th Progress Report

 57% of students have a least one D or F:  320/560

21% of students have three or more Ds or Fs:  120/560

How the program works:

o Core: (Students are required to attend if they have 1 or 2 Ds or Fs)

Students work on assignments to raise their grades in classes.

Ideally, students work with the teacher in whose class they are achieving below average grades.

Student grades reassessed each progress report.

o SuperCore:  (Students are required to attend if they have 3 or more Ds or Fs)

Teachers and students develop trust and gradual grade improvement.

o SuperCore cont’d:

Student grades reassessed each progress report.

o Flex:  (Students who successfully maintain grades at Cs or above in all classes)

Supervised free time to work on homework, work in the library/computer lab, work on scholarships or college applications, go to the gym or weight room, or talk with friends in the commons.

o Freshmen: (All freshmen attend during the first quarter, then move into other options based on grades)

Help freshmen adjust to high school.

o Staff Collaboration:

Around 2x a month, staff will meet to collaborate on increasing standards and rigor.  Students will have a 2 hour late start.

The high school is hoping this program will help increase student motivation to achieve higher grades  in our school. Although we acknowledge the program is just one tool, we are hopeful that it will help students increase their achievement and provide staff with opportunities to align standards and increase the rigor of our curriculum.

 Thank you for your support.
