New Transportation Facility

New Transportation Facility

You may have noticed our construction happening just West of us on Monte-Elma Road. That is the new East Grays Harbor Transportation Cooperative. Way back in 2003, the Elma School District began trying to determine how to deal with a dilapidated and quickly deteriorating transportation facility. Over the intervening years a number of proposals were discussed and did not come to fruition. Finally, in November of 2010, the District asked the voters to help fund the construction of a facility that would be a cooperative involving four school districts with Elma as the lead district. The vote did not pass, but the need was still there, so the district looked at other options. The Board determined that the District had saved enough to provide the matching funds to complete the project, and moved forward with the project. This cooperative, in addition to Elma will include McCleary, Oakville and Satsop school districts.  The funding for this building will largely come from Washington State. It will be built on property the district already owns just West of the District office. The funding that the state does not provide will come from money the district has saved since 2003. The winning bid for the project was from Rognlins Inc. at $3.27 million. We anticipate our share of the project much of which will be equipment will come to $1.6 million. This is money the district has been saving since 2003 and will not affect our school programs. Upon completion, this facility will allow the district to reduce costs, allowing for more programs for our students. Cost savings include no longer needing to rent a facility to house our drivers, secretaries and other transportation staff. We are anticipating a completion date of May, 2018.
