OVERVIEW
The goal of each model is to provide access to core content and develop English academic literacy. There are two models to serve ELLs in the elementary grades:
ELL Pull-Out
Sheltered Classrooms
ELL Pull-Out
During a scheduled time that does not interfere with core instruction, ELL students go to the ELL room to receive specific, targeted language instruction to increase their academic fluency.
• Group sizes are smaller for more individualized language instruction.
• Instructors know their ELL students’ language strengths and needs based on their ELPA21 scores and established rapport with students.
• Instruction is scaffolded using National Geographic and Hampton Brown’s “Reach” curriculum.
• Focus on literacy and writing using Reach curriculum and supplemental texts and books.
Sheltered Classrooms
For the 2017-2018 school year Elma Elementary School will pilot 3 sheltered classrooms where the content/classroom teacher is trained in sheltered instruction using the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction / Observation Protocol) Model.
• ELL students in the sheltered classrooms will receive their language support and development through the content materials.
• ELL students in the sheltered classrooms will not be part of the ELL pull-out model. They will receive their language development support in the classroom.
• Classroom teacher knows their ELL students’ language strengths and needs based on their ELPA21 scores and established rapport with students.
• The classroom teachers trained in SIOP will receive additional support to effectively implement and support their ELL students in the classroom.
• The classroom teacher will plan and deliver instruction for English language development within the literacy core and beyond.
• Instruction is scaffolded to ensure ELL students access to core content and curriculum.
